Suzanne Nielsen's I Thought You Should Know is now out and available for shipping. As ever, it has been great working with her. Suzanne's poems in ITYSK are a lot different from her earlier work.

Next from So'ham is River of Light, a first book of inspirational prose, poetry and artwork by Jasmine Kang, a young poetess. Hers is simple work, but touching in its own way. So'ham Books spoke to Jasmine recently about her work, inspiration and background. Read the interview below.

S.B.: Tell us something about your background, work and family. At what age did you start penning poetry? How did it all begin?

J.K.: I come from a Punjabi Indian family. I graduated from San Jose State University with a B.S. in Business Administration/Management and a minor in Humanities. Since then, I have worked in the high tech industry. On the side, I like working on creative projects with my art and writing. I started writing poetry around age 11 when I began exploring spirituality. Writing is an escape. It's a beautiful feeling to be able to pour your thoughts on paper and express yourself, your dreams and reflections.

S.B.: What do you think are the defining traits of your poems?

J.K.: I think the defining traits of my poems are discovery, experience, realization and the beauty and love of life in all its aspects (what we see, feel, desire). Each poem tells a story, but at the same time connects with the other poems.

S.B.: What poets do you enjoy reading? What sort of fiction do you usually read? Who are your literary idols?

J.K.: For poetry, I like the works of Kahlil Gibran, Roma Ryan, Michael Jackson, Rabindranath Tagore, Flavia Weedn, Rumi, Mirabai, Kabir and Helen Steiner Rice. For fiction and literature in general, Chitra Divakaruni, Brian Weiss and Deepak Chopra. My favorite books are Only Love is Real; Many Lives, Many Masters; Dancing the Dream; and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success.

S.B.: Tell us something about your Indian connection.

J.K.: My family is from Punjab, India. I took birth in California, but have visited India a number of times.

S.B.: How did River of Light come about? What period of your life does it embody poems from?

J.K.: I always wanted to do something like this, to be able to share my thoughts and feelings about life and our connection to it with others. Through our thoughts and experiences, we can enrich each other and my hope is to do the same with this. River of Light is an inspirational collection of early and new poems, prose and stories that all connect with each other telling a story of a dreamer and poet, but it's not just about the poet and what she sees or feels, it's universal. The work came about through my reflections through the years.

S.B: River of Light also embodies your sketches? Tell us more about them.

J.K.: The sketches capture the dreamer and poet of River of Light and celebrate what life has to offer through what she sees and has to share standing by holding out a flower, sitting by a river and seeing with her eyes. The flower signifies the gift and beauty of life, the heart of River of Light.

I Thought You Should Know

We are working on Suzanne's second book of poems, I Thought You Should Know, which should be out sometime next month. Like always, Suzanne comes across as a powerful poet, observant and novel in the ways she treats the language. The book has a very American tone to it, and the America that reflects in it is unlike the America that we have known here in India. Suzanne speaks to us as the other America: the America that is a co-traveler, the America that we do not work for. The America in her book speaks to us in many voices that seem so close.

Take, for example, her poem "3.14159" where the day begins with a cup of coffee, more coffee and "watching static," and comes to a close "sitting in the center of room and waiting for an impression." No necessary articles, barely grammatical. It is this monotony that recurs in poems like "1861 to 1864," revealing the disturbing dimensions of a world where "nome de plumes exist for a reason on the Internet; nobody is left responsible." Responsible for genocides, bomb explosions that leave hundreds dead in a split second.

She tells us funny stories that she just remembered. Stories that she thought we should know. And we listen spellbound, realizing there are bits of us in all of them. Bits that will never come together.

Suzanne Nielsen's fiction, a perspective

So'ham says: The critical note posted below is several years old. The stories that Wittenberg discusses were published in The Moon Behind the 8-Ball and other stories (2008), Suzanne's book of flash fiction published by So'ham Books.

Suzanne is an absolutely wonderful writer to work with--calm, responsive and receptive to change. The Moon... is her second So'ham publication after East of the River, a book of poems.

Suzanne Nielsen is a writer of literary fiction whose work is deeply rooted in our own East Side of St. Paul. Often her work concerns stories of the working poor.

I recently had the pleasure to read one of her latest endeavors, titled “Nora’s Needs”. Truly, I broke out with laughter at much of her moving, honest prose, of indelible, sometimes brutal imagery.

“We stabbed centipedes in her basement with a wire hanger that we undid and used like a whip. When Nora pierced the bugs in the center of their bodies, they would arch their backs while moving their legs in a million directions until they finally gave into death,” Suzanne writes in Nora’s voice.

This talented writer deserves greater recognition, I dare say. Sometimes her language is salty, but genuine, no doubt due to her experience of our ever so gentle East Side. Her work is often gritty, littered with broken down cars, shattered glass, windows blocked out by plywood, glitters of shards that “glowed like diamonds in the sunlight.”

She writes of poverty and “white trash,” the sort we’ve all known or seen one time or another. Suzanne writes of a woman whose lips “flapped through her toothless growl,” and “foaming from the comers of her mouth,” and of nightmares displaying a large “German Shepherd, with the head of old Mrs. Nephling running after me, all her teeth in place.”

Certainly, I could see parts of old St. Paul in her prose: in phrases such as “grandma’s porch surrounded in pretty lace,” in “communion dresses and bingo,” of what may bring one to Heaven, and of stomachs “the size of the Indian mounds at the park.” She writes of Earl Street, and how can one not think of this great thoroughfare as nostalgic, if not “edenesque.” Oh to take a drive down Earl, in all it’s splendor!

Suzanne is a writing tutor at Metropolitan State’s Writing Center, and has been writing for Whistling Shade, a literary press, where she tackles a monthly column called “Cool Dead People” - a collection of essays on folks whom she feels more should have the privilege to know. This column can be read online for Double Dare Press at www.doubledarepress.com. Ms. Nielsen has taught creative writing at the Loft, both for adults and children. She has studied chemical dependency counseling for a decade, and is a Metropolitan State grad of ’95. Besides her tutoring, she is currently undertaking her doctorate in education at Hamline University.

As to listing her primary source of inspiration, she named George Singleton, and also mentioned notable Dayton’s Bluff authors Alison Mcghee and Susan Williams.

Ms. Nielsen’s short story “8 Days” was published in a literary journal called ‘Splunkerflophouse.’ Furthermore, Suzanne has had her work appear in over 50 publications. Her large array of creative work also includes poetry, which I hope she continues, and may such efforts find more venues in which they can be shared. In an example of her vivid verse she writes: “Just east of the river/ a mom sorts through day old/ bakery with tattooed tears/ dripping down her cheek... hunting for bargains with eyes that/ are drowning in their own pools/ of discontent.”

This summer, Suzanne is planning to work on her fiction: a novel-in-stories.

When I asked her to characterize her writing, she said - “Place is prevalent, as is the working class. The characters sort of take over. I write from that perspective. It’s what I know.” In summing up, she remembered a quote from her husband, who said in referring to her work: “You can take the girl out of the East Side, but you can’t get the East Side out of the girl.”
